Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.

    - John F Kennedy

    Our Vision

Our pupils will become physically educated through experiencing a range of activities. They will develop their social skills through communication and collaboration, build their confidence to take part in physical activity and develop their competence in a range of physical skills which encourage critical thinking and problem-solving. Through physical education, we want our children to foster a love and understanding of their body and how to treat it well both mentally and physically.

    Subject Leader: Mrs Vicky Mylius

    Intent

At Forest Edge, we aim to develop our children's basic physical competencies, build their confidence in their own ability and build the foundations for a lifelong love of sport, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. Our schools aim to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nuture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as celebrating their own successes. We want to teach children to keep safe, such as being able to swim. We also want to teach children how to cooperate with others as part of an effective team, understand fairness and equality of play to embed life-long values.

    Implementation

PE should enable pupils to build foundations for a lifelong love of sport, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.

We consider the journey of a child through Forest Edge, so that the curriculum is progressive, building on prior learning and regularly revisiting taught concepts.

Each class has a two-year rolling programme which has been designed to match the needs of our schools and to ensure we deliver the full programme of study outlined in the National Curriculum.

Our PE lessons are structured to provide one hour every week focussing on a specific sport. These sports have been carefully selected to offer a broad range of sports, whilst also considering what sports our children need to be competent at when they move onto the local secondary schools. We also carefully consider popular local sports. Sports are repeated throughout the school so that children can consolidate their understanding of each sport, having opportunities to learn the rules, strategies and tactics whilst also becoming competent in skills.

The second hour of PE focusses on the fundamental movement skills that pupils need to be successful in a range of sports.

Our PE curriculum is planned using the Get Set 4 PE platform, which aligns with our core values and the objectives laid out in the National Curriculum.

    Impact

By the time they leave us, our children will have experienced a range of sports through both our PE curriculum and bespoke sporting events. They will have developed the fundamental skills needed to take part in competitive sports beyond the school environment.

    Overview of Sports
